Hypothyroidism

OVERVIEW: Hypothyroidism (also called underactive thyroid, low thyroid, or hypothyreosis) is a disorder of the endocrine system in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.

CAUSES:

  • Poorly formed or small thyroid gland
  • Genetic
  • Too little iodine in the mother’s diet during pregnancy
  • Radioactive iodine treatment
  • Medicines that disrupt thyroid hormone

SYMPTOMS:

  • Lack of weight gain
  • Stunted growth
  • Fatigue, lethargy
  • Poor feeding
  • Thickened facial features
  • Abnormal bone growth
  • Mental retardation
  • Constipation

TREATMENT: Routinely screened for thyroid hormone levels. The test involves taking a small blood sample from the baby’s heel. A laboratory checks the baby’s blood levels of thyroid hormone (T4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Here we provide some products without any side effects helpful for all initial symptoms.
