Hypothyroidism
OVERVIEW: Hypothyroidism (also called underactive thyroid, low thyroid, or hypothyreosis) is a disorder of the endocrine system in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.
CAUSES:
- Poorly formed or small thyroid gland
- Genetic
- Too little iodine in the mother’s diet during pregnancy
- Radioactive iodine treatment
- Medicines that disrupt thyroid hormone
SYMPTOMS:
- Lack of weight gain
- Stunted growth
- Fatigue, lethargy
- Poor feeding
- Thickened facial features
- Abnormal bone growth
- Mental retardation
- Constipation
TREATMENT: Routinely screened for thyroid hormone levels. The test involves taking a small blood sample from the baby’s heel. A laboratory checks the baby’s blood levels of thyroid hormone (T4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Here we provide some products without any side
effects helpful for all initial symptoms.
